Red-throated Diver, Old Colwyn

This bird was off Rainbow bridge this morning. Looks like a Red-throated Diver but it shows a distinct chin-strap in the field, which shows in the photo. Any comments welcome.

  1. Odd stage of moult but I think thats it. Size and proportions are pro RTD. Seen a few siting on their side like this in last week or so.

  2. I had a cracking full summer bird in Cemlyn bay at the weekend.

  3. It certainly does have a distinct chinstrap - a bit too distinct I fear. Agree that it's a Red throat -proportions look slim and Red throat like and they often 'roll' like this bird. As the bird is just starting to moult (the high breast / lower have darker feathers already) the chinstrap is probably also moulting feathers. Interesting though.

  4. Either moulting feathers or shadow from the strong light i'd have thought...
