3 Roseate Terns on Clwyd

Struck gold with not 1, not 2, but three Roseate Terns on the River Clwyd late this afternoon just before high tide. Cracking birds indeed. Not the best photo quality as it was phone-scoped through heat haze but you can still make them out

Here's two of them
Three birds present towards left hand side of flock here

  1. Nice one Alex. The 3 were a lot further up the river tonight on the east side by the old wrecked boat.

Glad that Kev and Julian finally got to see them.

  2. Cheers Alex. Long awaited County tick for me. Not a bad year for county ticks so far.

  3. Wow, a great record! As warden at Cemlyn, I'm wondering what these birds are doing here at this time of year? Did they try to breed somewhere else, and gave up early? Why aren't all those Sandwich Terns in the middle of breeding too? Its been a strange season for breeding seabirds.

  4. David, sandwich terns build up here from mid June onwards and can reach 700+ by mid July when many youngsters start appearing here. I presume those there now are non breeding birds. However many are displaying big time.
