Scaup?

I'm after some help! As you can imagine, Scaup isn't a bird you come across very often in Powys so my I.D skills aren't up to scratch with them! I saw this bird yesterday on Llyn Coed-y-Dinas (Welshpool), and thought that it was a 1st winter drake Scaup.

Any thoughts?
Cheers

  1. Interesting bird but something looks dodgey. Didnt think it was a drake as should be clean-cut by now. Bill looks sort of ok but thats about it for me- think it may be a hybrid with tufty or even pochard genes winning. Could be wrong.

  2. Looks a little odd, but I think it's a first winter drake Scaup.See if you can get a few more photos Paul if you get a chance. Also if it hangs around you may be able to see how it's plumage progresses through the winter.

  3. Certainly more Scaup genes in it than anything else Paul. More pics would clinch it I'm sure. I would tentively agree with 1st winter Scaup. Nice find anyway :-)
