6 hour Bird Race - Eastern Conwy

Tony Kearney, Iwan (my lad) and I (and joined by Michelle my wife for a couple of hours!) tried a 6 hour bird race today organised by Kath of http://naturebites.wordpress.com/ - Good fun and a few bits and pieces seen.

Started off early morning at Glanwydden where Stock Dove, Pheasant etc were seen while nearby Purple Sandpipers and other waders were at Rhos Point. Pentre Mawr Park held Gadwall and Shoveler and a skulky Water Rail and the Snow Bunting were showing very well at Horton's Nose. Rhyl Brickwork pools held eight superb Goosanders as well as a meele of Coot, Mallard and Tufted Duck.

At the River Clwyd we saw Bar tailed Godwit, Black tailed Godwits, more Grey Plovers, lots of Dulin and two lovely Golden Plovers with the Lapwings. Bullfinch, Goosander and Little Egret were seen here too. Unfortunately no sign of Alan's Gull from yesterday, however there were a few more Lesser black backed Gulls around.

The woods at Gloddaeth held the hoped for Treecreeper, Nuthatch and Grea Spotted Woodpecker while our final destination; the Little Orme, produced 5 Chough, Rock Pipit, Fulmar as well as some difficult birds such as Long tailed Tit, Coal tit and Goldcrest.

We finished at 2pm with a total of 82 species seen in the six hours - not bad for a small stretch of coast.

  1. Great going, very few miles traveled for over 80 species. Good to hear that the family were along to help! We hope to have a go on Tuesday in Norfolk fog willing, be interesting to compare.
